Quick answers

Are mushrooms legal in San Diego?

No. Psilocybin mushrooms are illegal under California and federal law. Possessing any amount for personal use is usually a misdemeanor, and selling or giving them away is a felony. San Diego hasn't passed a decriminalization measure. See our full legal guide.

Where do people in San Diego get magic mushrooms?

There's no legal source in California. What's sold through local delivery services, online shops, smoke shops and social media is unlicensed, and lab tests have repeatedly found mislabeled products, including synthetic drugs sold as "magic mushroom" candy. Our guides to dispensaries and delivery explain the risks.

Is psilocybin decriminalized anywhere in California?

Seven cities have told their police to make it a low priority: Oakland, Santa Cruz, Arcata, San Francisco, Berkeley, Eureka and Nevada City. It's still illegal under state law there, and none of them is in Southern California.

Are there poisonous mushrooms in San Diego?

Yes. The western destroying angel is common under oaks here, and death caps have been documented in North County and parts of the City of San Diego. Both can cause fatal liver failure. Don't eat any wild mushroom without an expert, and call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 if someone does.

Is psilocybin therapy available in San Diego?

Not outside clinical trials. UC San Diego runs psilocybin research in La Jolla. Oregon offers licensed, supervised sessions to adults 21 and over from any state, and Colorado licenses healing centers (check the state's rules for visitors). See every legal option.
